The five most common New Year’s Resolutions are as follows:
1. Lose weight
2. Exercise More
3. Save Money/Spend Less
4. Spend More Time with Friends and Family
5. Read More
The easiest way to stick to a goal, is to write it down and leave it some place you will see it often. When something is written down it becomes more tangible and seems more like another item on your to do list, rather than something that you can return to later. For example, if your goal is to save more money create a budget spreadsheet, pin it to your computer desktop, and check it often. Or, download an app that will track your spending and send alerts to your phone.
Be specific when choosing a goal. It is much easier to track progress when trying to reach a goal of “lose ten pounds by April,” than one that is simply to “lose weight,” because there is a clear finish line.
Bring a friend on board! Set a date to exercise with a friend, or join a book club. Setting goals with others holds you more accountable, and makes it less likely that you will give up. No one nearby to meet up with? You can always join a fitness class at a gym or join a book club at a local library, and as a bonus make new friends!
